The Tripartite Struggle

The Epic Battle for the Control of Kannauj (800 AD - 1200 AD)

The Gurjara-Pratiharas

Ruling mainly in Western India and the Gangetic plains. They were known for their strong resistance against Arab invasions and their magnificent temple architecture.

The Palas of Bengal

Dominant in Eastern India. They were great patrons of Buddhism and founded the famous Vikramshila University. Their rule saw a golden age for Bengali culture.

The Rashtrakutas

Powerhouses of the Deccan. Rulers like Amoghavarsha I were great poets and builders. They were the only Southern power to successfully intervene in North Indian politics.

The Prize: Kannauj

Kannauj was the symbol of sovereignty in North India. Controlling it meant controlling the fertile trade routes of the Ganges.

For nearly two centuries, these three dynasties fought constantly, which eventually weakened all of them and paved the way for foreign invasions.
